Raiders of the Lost Ark

Raiders of the Lost Ark (2600)Get ready for the new movie with the oldest Indy videogame.

We’re gonna need a bigger boat window

NEStopia 1.39 for Linux continues along. New: more options! See for yourself…

If I may blow SDLMAME’s horn a bit…

Here’s some nice footage someone recently posted of SDLMAME on the PS3 playing a variety of games. This is why the portability of MAME is cool :-) And unlike past console MAME setups this won’t void your warranty or hurt your ability to play normal games, on or offline.

Behind the scenes

It’s going to be busy for me at work for the next few weeks, but a few things that are cooking:

- Linux NEStopia 1.39
- Linux and Windows ViBE (Virtual Boy emulator)

Plus this blog has been upgraded to the latest and spiffiest WordPress 2.5.1 for your and my protection :-)

Now your penguin is a man

A quick 40 minute hack brings together, at last, the Manly 2SF Archive and Linux. Yes, you can now play 2SF rips on Linux in brilliant stereo. Due to the GPL license on Desume I can’t integrate this in AO or AOSDK and therefore the user experience is somewhere between “bare” and “sucks”, but it does work and it does sound great on both x86 and x64.

The impossible, once again possible

Here’s Virtua Racing for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive with the “SVP” polygon chip in MESS, based on a submission by notaz.

Naomi, now more than ever

Samuele Zannoli is at it again. Here’s a few SH-4 bugfixes and Naomi I/O board improvements later…

I’ve also further improved the Naomi audio emulation. No new samples this time, sorry.

The noise: brought

A couple of nice coincidences linked together today. First up, I submitted the AICA core to MAME so Naomi now has sound. Secondly, MAME Italia dumped the Naomi game Toy Fighter, which successfully gets into it’s test mode (gameplay doesn’t work). Test mode includes the sound test, and here’s what it sounds like, with the “load times” cut out to make things managable.

Noise patrol

I’m working on emulation of the AICA (the Dreamcast/Naomi/Hikaru sound chip) behind the scenes with kingshriek and Deunan Knute (the Makaron author). Since AICA is basically an SCSP with double the voices and a few feature tweaks the obvious basis was MAME’s now reference-quality SCSP emulation. That’s allowed us to get to a pretty good state in a short amount of time. The ADPCM sample type isn’t quite right yet, but the basic functionality and effects DSP are working.

Music to bleed Aaron’s wallet fix bugs to

You may think the likes of MAMEdev and MESSdev are weird because we have a hobby that somewhat mirrors what many of us also do professionally. You’re probably also looking for good new music. And now you’re confused as to how I put those things together.
