An Apple II emulation first!

MAME just became the first Apple IIgs emulator capable of emulating an Apple II with a SCSI CD-ROM drive attached. This means the IIgs driver can boot from and use the Golden Orchard CD-ROM, and it can browse other CD-ROMs.
Here we are after booting from the Golden Orchard 1.2 CD-ROM:

And here’s the IIgs Finder browsing a PlayStation game disc:

MAME 0.208 Apple II and /// updates

In addition to adding more 4am preserved software to our Software List functionality, 0.208 has the following things of interest to pre-Mac Apple fans:

Upcoming Apple II emulation fun and a little business

MAME’s Apple II and IIe emulation soon will be able to run at 3.6 times normal speed, because we’re emulating the TransWarp accelerator card from back in the day.

MAME: where Spelunx is in color

The Internet Archive may use a less-capable Mac emulator, but you don’t have to. Here’s how to use their HyperCard stacks on MAME:

Initial setup
Download the HyperCard startup image from this page. Click “Download ISO Image” to get HyperCardBootSystem7.img.

跟猴子比丟屎

No, Google Translate will not render that title as anything worthwhile. It’s a line from Firefly.
Anyway, the fine folks at the Internet Archive recently surfaced a ton of materials relating to the China Educational Computer I, or CEC-I. The CEC-I was an almost chip-for-chip clone of the Apple //e (including the MMU and IOC custom chips), but the aux side is devoted to a bunch of new ROM containing Chinese fonts, a built-in LOGO interpreter, and who knows what else (there’s 384K of extra ROM in this thing compared to a real //e).

Skinning a game?

It’s not quite ready to be playable yet in 0.176, but Ted Green has been chipping away at Midway’s Zeus-2 graphics chip, with particular emphasis on Midway Skins Game (but it’s helping Cruisin’ Exotica too, and should eventually help The Grid as well).
Here’s a few screenshots to whet your appetite for the future.

Thanks, Jason!

For this lovely promotion of our Apple II and /// work. (We’ve done some things with the Mac, too, and someday Lisa will fall).
